Nas is planning on collaborating with Frank Ocean, whom he calls “a new gust of wind”, on his next album. His forthcoming album is inspired by new music, and after his last release, ‘Nas’, which he seems to feel was a somewhat incomplete or fractured release, he is ready to return to the studio. He seems much more willing to go with the flow and let what happens happen on this upcoming release, he even stated that he had over thought the music too much on his previous album.
Nas’ ‘Illmatic’ is within the top three or five greatest rap albums ever made, it’s probably one of the best albums in music in general. Although he hasn’t been able to achieve the mind blowing, almost demi-god-like lyrical state of mind he was in on his debut, the Queens born rapper has still released some solid tracks over the years.
Frank Ocean on the other had is a fast rising star and the designated RnB talent in the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All rap group. Personally I consider him to be among the most talented in the group. His music is an ethereal, kind of psychedelic RnB, with a strong dose of guitar sampling. While he has been compared to Drake by some, this guy is infinitely more talented then Drake. Comparing Frank Ocean to Drake is like comparing Family Guy to the Cleveland Show. Its Just. Not. The. Same. Just like Family Guy, Frank is on a whole other level.
So basically, I’m psyched for Nas’ next album now.
One Love – Nas
Novacane – Frank Ocean
This morning on the train to work, all I listened to was Kendrick Lamar and Modest Mouse, and odd combination but it seemed to work. I stared out the window and wondered when Modest Mouse would be dropping their next album, since I am, admittedly a huge Modest Mouse fan.
Well imagine my surprise when…
Seriously one of the coolest collaborations ever. If any rapper can do it, it would be someone like Big Boi, who’s genre bending hip-hop finds inspiration from all over the place. And Modest Mouse? well they’re pretty much indie rock’s equivalent, a genre bending, drunken, messy philosophical soundscapes are good enough to satisfy just about everyone and anyone in between.
While little information has surfaced about Modest Mouse’s next album, this little bit of information is just about enough in itself to carry me over until their next release.
Maybe Big Boi’s ‘Tangerine’, which feature’s some rock touches, can give us some insight into what’s about to happen in the Portland studio with Big Boi and Modest Mouse, but probably not.
Meanwhile, ‘Heart Cooks Brain’ touches on hip-hop scratches a bit…
Whatever happen’s, I have no idea what to expect, the artists involved in this collaboration are some of the most unpredictable in their respective genres.
Meanwhile, enjoy this Lil Wayne, Modest Mouse mashup…
Cool video on collaboration, and the fact that a major portion of creativity isn’t the ability to create something completely new, but to take someone old, and turn it into something new.
Rapper MF Doom has been working on what he calls some “preliminary shit” with Thom Yorke, but thinks that the recording sessions will eventually develop into a whole album. They have worked together before on a remix, “Gazillion Ear”. MF Doom has been around for a while, and in addition to his solo releases, has a prolific collaboration record. In addition to his collaboration with Yorke, an album from the duo Madvillain, (which consists of MF Doom and Madlib) is expected later this year.
Somersault (Danger Mouse Remix ft. MF Doom) – Zero 7
Accordion – Madvillain
Black Swan – Thom Yorke
