Neo-Motown tinged crooner, Mayer Hawthorne dropped his sophomore effort, ‘How Do You Do’, a couple weeks ago on October, 11. The album is a much looser and exploratory album then his previous release, as Hawthorne works to incorporate a wider range of genres and distance himself from being considered simply a talented soul re-creator, and establish himself as a soul artist for a new generation. The album even features a guest spot from rap artist, Snoop Dogg, who ditches his traditional west coast gangsta flow for a soft, swagger soaked verse of surprisingly awesome singing. ‘How Do You Do’ is an example of Hawthorne’s maturation as an artist. While he sticks to his expertise, hip-hop influenced neo-soul music, the songs contain more attitude, more bounce, and much more of a modern feel. In today’s industry Hawthorne is an idiosyncratic example of creativity that demands attention.
